COURSE CURRICULUM
The graduate program in Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies at University at Albany (UAlbany) is designed to provide students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation in the histories, cultures, politics, and social dynamics of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latino communities in the United States. The program begins with core required courses, including Theoretical Approaches to Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies (I and II), as well as specialized seminars focused on Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latino Studies, which help students develop advanced analytical frameworks for understanding regional and transnational issues. Students then build depth in their chosen area through specialty courses, completing at least three courses in one track while also taking at least one course in another, ensuring both specialization and comparative understanding across regions. A key academic component of the program is directed readings, where students work closely with faculty advisors and second readers to develop either a master’s project or comprehensive exam, supported by guided research and bibliographic training. Language proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese is also required, typically demonstrated through a high grade in advanced coursework or successful completion of an exam, ensuring students can engage directly with primary sources and communities. Beyond classroom learning, the program emphasizes experiential education through outreach, service learning, and internship opportunities in local, national, and international settings. Students may participate in community-based projects in the Capital Region or abroad, including Central and South America and the Caribbean, or pursue teaching internships under faculty supervision. Competitive internships, such as with the New York State Puerto Rican/Hispanic Legislative Task Force, provide hands-on experience in policymaking and legislative work, particularly for bilingual students with strong cultural competencies. Overall, the program combines rigorous academic training with practical engagement, preparing graduates for careers in education, public service, policy, and international development.
