COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Criminal Justice program at University at Albany (UAlbany) provides a comprehensive program of study focused on understanding criminal justice systems, crime theories, and evidence-based policy evaluation. The curriculum is designed to strengthen students’ analytical, research, and statistical skills while preparing them for advanced roles in justice-related fields such as law enforcement, policy development, crime analysis, and academic research. Through a combination of theoretical foundations and applied learning, students gain a deeper understanding of how justice systems function and how policies can be evaluated and improved.The program offers flexibility through a general track or specialized concentration areas, allowing students to align their studies with specific career goals. Available concentrations include Crime Causation, Prevention, and Intervention; Justice Systems; and Problem Solving and Analysis, while an Information Technology track is currently unavailable. This structure enables students to build expertise in focused areas while maintaining a broad understanding of criminal justice principles.Core foundation courses include Theories of Crime and Theoretical Foundations of Criminal Justice, along with a supporting sequence in applied statistics and research design, which strengthens students’ ability to conduct data-driven analysis. Students also complete 18 credits of elective coursework in graduate-level criminal justice subjects, which may include concentration-related courses.A key component of the program is the Capstone Seminar (CRJ 799), where students synthesize their learning and demonstrate field competency through a comprehensive project. This capstone experience allows them to integrate academic knowledge with practical skills, showcasing their ability to analyze and address real-world criminal justice issues effectively.
