COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Africana Studies at the University at Albany offers a multidisciplinary program that allows students to explore the political, cultural, historical, and social dimensions of peoples of African descent. The curriculum begins with core requirements, including a research seminar and socio-methodology course, which provide essential training in research methods and analytical approaches within Africana Studies. Students then choose between two primary pathways: African Studies or African American Studies, allowing them to tailor their academic focus according to their interests.Within the African American Studies track, students select from courses such as African American literature, history, or race theory and social thought, gaining deeper insight into the experiences and contributions of African Americans. In the African Studies track, course options include African economics, history, and politics, offering a broader global perspective on the African continent and its role in world affairs. In addition to these selections, students must complete 12 credits within their chosen concentration, ensuring a strong level of specialization.The program also includes supporting coursework, where students may take a limited number of credits outside the Africana Studies department to broaden their academic experience. To complete the degree, students must successfully pass a comprehensive examination that evaluates their understanding of key concepts and areas within the field. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for degree completion. Overall, the program combines focused specialization with interdisciplinary learning, preparing students for careers in academia, public service, research, and related fields, as well as for further doctoral study.
