COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Economics and Data Analysis at the University at Albany is structured to build strong foundational knowledge in economics while progressively developing advanced quantitative and analytical skills for real-world application. Students begin the program with core courses in Principles of Economics I: Microeconomics and Principles of Economics II: Macroeconomics, which introduce essential concepts such as market behavior, consumer and firm decision-making, production processes, government functions, and the determination of key economic indicators like growth, inflation, unemployment, and interest rates. Building on this foundation, students complete intermediate-level coursework in microeconomics and macroeconomics along with economic statistics, which strengthens their understanding of economic theory and data interpretation. A key component of the program is Econometrics and Data Analytics, where students learn to apply statistical and computational methods to analyze economic data and evaluate real-world problems. The curriculum also includes mathematics requirements such as Calculus I and II, or honors and applied alternatives, ensuring students have the quantitative tools necessary for advanced economic modeling. In addition, students take five upper-level economics electives (15 credits), with at least two courses at the 400-level or a Senior Honors Research Seminar, allowing them to specialize in areas such as macroeconomic modeling, game theory, international trade, international macroeconomics, financial economics, and labor economics. The program culminates in a capstone course in applied econometrics, where students design, conduct, and present an empirical research project on an economic question of their choice, integrating theory, data analysis, and interpretation. Overall, this structured program prepares students for careers in economics, finance, policy analysis, and data-driven roles in both public and private sectors, as well as for advanced graduate study.
