COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing 1+2+1 Bachelor of Science program at the University at Albany is a structured, multi-year pathway that prepares students for both immediate licensure as registered nurses and long-term professional advancement. In the first year, students complete general education and prerequisite coursework such as Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Introduction to Psychology, Lifespan Development, Writing and Critical Inquiry, and foundational nursing courses including Care and Caring and Foundations of Professional Nursing. These courses build a strong academic and conceptual base for nursing practice. During the second and third years, students enter a more intensive phase of nursing education through a partnership with St. Peter’s College of Nursing and St. Peter’s Health Partners. This phase includes advanced nursing courses, pharmacology, microbiology with lab, and evidence-based practice, along with significant clinical experience and preparation for the NCLEX licensing exam. Students also complete additional requirements at UAlbany, including statistics, general chemistry with lab, and general education courses to strengthen their scientific and analytical foundation. After successfully passing the NCLEX exam, students may begin working as registered nurses while completing their final year of study. The fourth year focuses on advanced nursing practice and leadership, with coursework in transformational leadership and management, community and public health nursing, transcultural nursing, and a senior practicum with extensive clinical hours. Students also complete electives tailored to their career interests, such as emergency care, ICU, or labor and delivery, and the program is delivered in a hybrid format for flexibility. Overall, the program prepares graduates for professional nursing practice, leadership roles, and continued career growth in diverse healthcare settings.
