COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Legal Studies at the University at Albany is a minimum 48-credit combined major and minor program designed to help students develop a broad and critical understanding of law through multiple academic perspectives. The program begins with a foundational course, Introduction to Legal Studies, which provides an interdisciplinary overview of legal systems by integrating insights from history, philosophy, political science, and criminal justice. This course establishes the basis for understanding how legal ideas and institutions are formed and how they operate within society. Students then take a structured mix of lower- and upper-level field courses across these four disciplines, ensuring a balanced academic foundation in both theoretical and applied aspects of legal studies. A key component of the program is the capstone course, where students engage in in-depth research on a legal topic of personal interest, allowing them to synthesize their learning and demonstrate advanced analytical skills. The program also offers flexibility through three academic tracks: law in theory, law in practice, and a general track, enabling students to tailor their coursework to their specific interests and career goals. In addition, students can incorporate experiential learning opportunities such as study abroad or interdisciplinary coursework into their electives. In their senior year, students may also take a course at Albany Law School to gain direct exposure to legal education. Overall, the program prepares students for careers in law, public service, business, and related fields, while also providing a strong foundation for law school or graduate study.
