COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor’s in Human Development at the University at Albany is designed to help students understand how people grow, learn, and function across the lifespan by integrating perspectives from psychology, sociology, and education. The program begins with core courses such as Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, and Introduction to Educational Psychology, which provide a broad foundation in human behavior, social systems, and learning processes. Students then build on this base through specialized coursework in educational and counseling psychology, including Lifespan Development, Psychology, Cultural Diversity and Social Justice, Understanding Research in Human Development, and Introductory Statistics in Human Development. These courses help students develop a strong understanding of human growth while also gaining skills in research and data interpretation. A key feature of the program is its field-based learning experience, which allows students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings such as schools, social service agencies, or research projects within the School of Education. Students also complete a concentration consisting of five courses tailored to their specific interests, along with additional elective options. Electives are offered across psychology, sociology, education, and community health topics, allowing students to explore areas such as social psychology, abnormal psychology, child and adolescent development, sociology of aging, race and gender studies, counseling psychology, and health behavior. This flexible structure enables students to focus on areas that align with their career goals. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in education, counseling, social services, research, and community development by combining academic knowledge with practical, applied learning experiences.
