COURSE CURRICULUM

The program structure combines a strong foundation in education with in-depth subject specialization to prepare students for effective teaching at the secondary level. The core courses, totaling 36 credits, focus on essential areas such as the foundations of education and teaching as a profession, helping students understand the role and responsibilities of educators. Students also study educational psychology, development, and assessment to learn how adolescents think, grow, and learn, along with strategies to evaluate their progress. Additional coursework in special education ensures future teachers can support diverse learners with varying needs, while literacy courses emphasize the development of reading and writing skills across subjects. Secondary-level teaching methods further equip students with practical strategies for lesson planning, classroom management, and effective instruction. Alongside this, students complete a concentration consisting of at least 30 credits in a chosen subject area, with a minimum of 15 upper-division credits to ensure advanced knowledge. Available concentrations include Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, English (with a double major option), Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies, and Spanish. This combination of professional education training and subject-specific expertise ensures graduates are well-prepared to teach their chosen discipline with confidence and effectiveness in Grades 7–12 classrooms.
