COURSE CURRICULUM

The women’s, gender and sexuality studies program at the University at Albany requires a minimum of 36 credits and is designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in understanding social inequalities and identity. The program begins with required courses that build a strong academic foundation, including introductory studies in feminism or social change, as well as courses that explore classism, racism, and sexism. Students also complete a research seminar and an advanced course in feminist theory or political thought, helping them develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills.A key component of the program is the practicum requirement, where students choose between hands-on learning opportunities. One option, Feminist Pedagogy in Practice, allows students to gain teaching and leadership experience by facilitating undergraduate seminar discussions, building confidence in communication and academic engagement. The other option is an internship in women’s, gender and sexuality studies, where students work with local organizations and nonprofit groups to address real-world social issues, gaining valuable professional experience and community involvement.In addition to required courses, students complete 21 credits of electives, with a significant portion at the advanced level, allowing them to explore specialized topics that match their interests and career goals. The program also offers a Global Distinction pathway, which students can achieve by completing globally focused coursework and participating in study abroad opportunities, enhancing their understanding of gender and social issues on an international scale. Overall, the curriculum combines academic depth with experiential learning, preparing students for careers in advocacy, education, policy, and community development while promoting a strong commitment to equity and social justice.
