COURSE CURRICULUM

The urban studies and planning program at the University at Albany offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for shaping modern cities. The program begins with core courses such as The American City, Introductory Urban Planning, Introductory Urban Geography, and World Cities: Geographies of Globalization, which provide a strong foundation in understanding urban development, spatial patterns, and global city dynamics.Students then build technical expertise through GIS-related coursework by selecting from options like Introduction to Geospatial Technologies, Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, or Methods of Urban Analysis. These courses help students develop important analytical and mapping skills used in urban planning and decision-making. To gain hands-on experience, students choose a community engagement course such as a planning workshop, site planning course, or internship, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects and community-based initiatives.The program also includes oral discourse courses that focus on critical urban issues, where students can explore topics such as environmental planning, urban ecology, transportation, development debates, and the relationship between people, place, and power. These courses strengthen communication and analytical skills while encouraging deeper engagement with contemporary urban challenges.In addition, students complete four advanced-level electives in urban studies and planning to further specialize in their areas of interest. The program concludes with a capstone course, Urban Design and Public Space, where students integrate their learning and demonstrate their ability to design thoughtful, functional, and sustainable urban environments. Overall, the program prepares graduates to address complex urban issues and contribute effectively to city planning and development.
