COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor’s in Psychology program at the University at Albany offers a comprehensive and holistic study of human behavior by integrating biological, cognitive, developmental, and social perspectives. The curriculum is designed to help students understand the complex factors that influence how individuals think, feel, and act, while also building strong skills in research, statistical analysis, and scientific reasoning. Students explore a wide range of specialized topics such as Behavior Genetics, which examines how heredity influences personality and behavior; Psychology and Language, which investigates the relationship between language structure and cognitive processing; and the History of Psychology, which traces the evolution of psychological theories and practices over time. The program emphasizes both theoretical foundations and applied learning, allowing students to connect abstract concepts to real-world behavior and mental processes. A major strength of the program is its strong focus on research and experiential learning, where students have the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors or participate in laboratory research teams. These research experiences span multiple areas of psychology, including behavioral neuroscience, clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, and social-personality psychology, giving students exposure to diverse approaches within the field. Required coursework includes Introduction to Psychology or Advanced Introduction to Psychology, Statistical Methods in Psychology, Experimental Psychology, and a designated “T” course, along with at least 15 credits of psychology electives. Students must also complete a minimum of 24 credits at the 300-level or above, ensuring advanced academic engagement. The curriculum is further organized into four key content areas: Cognitive Behavioral Approaches, Clinical Developmental Approaches, Social Basis, and Biological Basis, each requiring focused coursework. Through this structured yet flexible program, students gain a deep understanding of psychological science and develop critical thinking skills that prepare them for graduate study or careers in counseling, human services, education, research, and other fields related to understanding and improving human behavior.
