COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor’s program in Linguistics at the University at Albany provides a structured and in-depth study of how human language is formed, organized, and used across different cultures and contexts. The program begins with foundational courses in linguistics, including Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Syntax, and Introduction to Phonology, which help students understand the core components of language such as sentence structure, word formation, and sound systems. As students progress, they build more advanced analytical skills through courses like Advanced Syntax or Advanced Phonology and Field Methods in Anthropological Linguistics, where they learn how to collect and analyze real-world language data, often working directly with speakers of other languages. A key feature of the program is its strong emphasis on language diversity and global understanding. Students are required to complete one year of a non-Indo-European language or study linguistic structures in depth, along with demonstrating proficiency equivalent to two years of college-level foreign language study. This requirement strengthens both linguistic awareness and practical communication skills. The program also offers a wide range of electives that allow students to connect linguistics with related fields such as sociology, psychology, philosophy, computer science, communication theory, and statistics. Specialized topics like sociolinguistics, language and culture, historical linguistics, and language evolution provide deeper insight into how language interacts with society and cognition.
