COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism program at the University at Albany is designed to develop strong writing, analytical, and multimedia communication skills while preparing students to understand and report on complex global events. The curriculum combines practical journalism training with academic study in media analysis, history, ethics, and production, helping students become well-rounded and responsible media professionals. Core courses include Foundations of Journalism and Media Studies, Introduction to Reporting and News Writing, Reporting and News Writing II, Media Law and Ethics, and Digital Publication. These foundational classes build essential skills in news writing, ethical reporting, and digital storytelling. Students also take contextual courses that explore the role of media in society, including topics such as journalism history in the United States, global news perspectives, women in media, media and war, visual culture, and journalism in the digital age. These courses help students understand journalism within broader historical, cultural, and political contexts. In addition, skills-based courses allow students to specialize in areas such as investigative reporting, broadcast journalism, photojournalism, narrative journalism, magazine writing, public relations writing, and digital media production. Students also gain hands-on experience through internships or advanced elective coursework, further strengthening their professional readiness. Overall, the program emphasizes critical thinking, editorial judgment, and strong communication skills while training students to work across print, broadcast, and digital platforms.
