COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in History at the University at Albany is structured to build a strong foundation in historical knowledge, research skills, and critical analysis through a balanced combination of introductory, methodological, and advanced coursework. Students begin with foundational courses at the 100- and 200-level, which include at least one course each in U.S. History, European History, and World History, ensuring a broad understanding of major global regions and historical developments. In addition, students take one 200-level course from any historical area to further expand their regional or thematic interests. A key component of the program is the methods course, The Historian’s Craft: Methods, which introduces students to the tools and approaches historians use to research, interpret, and analyze historical evidence. This course strengthens students’ ability to evaluate sources and construct well-supported historical arguments. At the advanced level, students complete three 300- or 400-level courses, again including at least one each in U.S., European, and World History, allowing for deeper exploration of specialized topics. They also take an additional three upper-level courses in any region or theme, giving flexibility to pursue specific interests such as political history, cultural history, or social movements. Overall, the program emphasizes both breadth and depth, helping students understand historical developments across different regions while also developing advanced research and writing skills. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in education, law, public history, government, journalism, archival work, and graduate studies in history and related disciplines.
