COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Geography at the University at Albany is structured around a combination of core courses, elective options, and applied learning experiences that provide students with a strong understanding of both physical and human geography. The program begins with foundational coursework including Introduction to the Physical Environment, Introduction to Human Geography, and Introduction to Geospatial Technologies, which introduce students to key concepts in environmental systems, human populations, and spatial analysis tools. Students also complete a Capstone Experience in Geographic Thought, which allows them to synthesize their learning and apply geographic methods to advanced topics. Beyond the core, students select eight geography electives, ensuring breadth and depth across different areas of the discipline. These electives must include courses from each major cluster area and at least six upper-level courses at the 300 or 400 level. Students may also choose specialized courses such as World Population, India: Development Debates, Human Factors in Geographic Information Science, and Urban Ecology, depending on their interests. The program places a strong emphasis on experiential learning, offering internship opportunities with government agencies such as the U.S. Geological Survey, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the New York State Department of Transportation. These internships provide real-world experience in environmental analysis, planning, and geographic research. In addition, high-achieving students may join the Geography Honors Program, which allows closer collaboration with faculty and deeper engagement in geographic research. Students may apply during their junior or senior year. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in environmental planning, GIS, government agencies, research, and related fields by combining academic study with practical experience.
