COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English at the University at Albany offers a flexible and student-centered program designed to develop strong skills in writing, critical thinking, and literary analysis. The curriculum is organized into eight areas of study, allowing students to shape their academic experience based on personal interests, career goals, and intellectual curiosity. Students begin with required foundational courses such as Introduction to Writing in English Studies, Reading and Interpretation in English Studies, and Studies in Writing about Texts, which build essential skills in analytical reading and effective communication. The program also includes literature survey courses, where students choose two from options such as American Literary Traditions, British Literary Traditions I and II, Classics of Western Literature, or Postcolonial Literary Traditions. These courses provide a broad understanding of major literary movements, historical contexts, and cultural perspectives. Beyond these requirements, students complete elective coursework at various levels, including 3 credits at the 200 level, 12 credits at the 300 level, and 6 credits at the 400 level, allowing for deeper specialization in areas of interest. The program encourages exploration of diverse topics, including writing styles, gender and literature, professional writing, and cultural studies, helping students develop both creative and professional communication skills.
