COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Economics program at the University at Albany is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in economic theory, quantitative analysis, and applied problem-solving skills. The program begins with introductory courses in Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics, where students learn key concepts such as market operations, consumer and firm behavior, production processes, and the role of government in the economy. These courses also explain how major economic indicators like inflation, unemployment, interest rates, and economic growth are determined. Students then progress to intermediate-level coursework in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and economic statistics, which helps them develop analytical tools and methods used to interpret and evaluate economic data. A mathematics requirement, such as calculus or algebra-based courses, strengthens students’ quantitative and analytical abilities, which are essential for advanced economic study. Beyond the core requirements, students complete 18 additional credits in upper-level economics courses, allowing them to specialize in areas aligned with their interests and career goals, such as labor economics, international trade, or financial economics. The program also emphasizes applied learning through a senior-year internship, where students complete 150 hours of supervised professional experience and engage in academic assignments that connect theory to practice. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in independent research projects, further enhancing their analytical and problem-solving skills. Overall, the BA in Economics prepares students for careers in business, government, finance, and nonprofit organizations, while also providing a strong foundation for graduate study and research in economics and related fields.
