ABOUT UNIVERSITY

University at Albany, SUNY (UAlbany) is a public research university founded in 1844 in Albany and is one of the four university centers of the State University of New York. As of 2024, it enrolls over 17,500 students across nine schools and colleges, offering more than 50 undergraduate majors and more than 150 graduate programs, and is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities” for its very high research activity, with strengths in social sciences, public policy, life sciences, and atmospheric sciences. The university operates multiple campuses, including the Uptown and Downtown campuses in Albany and a Health Sciences Campus in Rensselaer, with portions extending into Guilderland. Originally established as the New York State Normal School for training teachers, it evolved into the New York State Normal College and later the College for Teachers, gradually expanding its academic offerings to include bachelor’s and master’s degrees; after the formation of SUNY in 1948, the institution transformed into a comprehensive public university, influenced by the vision of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who promoted the expansion of public higher education. By 1962, it became a doctoral-degree granting university and developed its modern Uptown Campus, marking a major phase of growth. Over time, UAlbany has added new colleges and research initiatives, particularly in nanotechnology, cybersecurity, and engineering, while also housing the New York State Writers Institute, founded by William Kennedy, which has hosted many distinguished writers and scholars, reflecting the university’s blend of strong academic tradition and ongoing innovation.
