COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science program in Speech-Language Pathology at The University of Southern Mississippi is a rigorous graduate program that prepares students for professional careers in diagnosing and treating communication and swallowing disorders across diverse populations and clinical settings. Admission requires applicants to hold a bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders or Speech and Hearing Science, including prerequisite coursework in biology with a laboratory component, statistics, and chemistry. Students from other academic backgrounds may complete leveling courses before applying. Applicants must also submit official GRE scores, academic transcripts, a résumé, a two-page statement of purpose, and three professional references. Before classes begin, all newly admitted students participate in a mandatory two-day orientation organized by the School of Speech and Hearing Sciences. The program combines academic study, clinical practicum, and optional research training, requiring students to complete between 60 and 66 credit hours over five semesters. Students must pass a comprehensive examination during their fourth semester and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA to continue into off-campus clinical placements. The curriculum covers advanced topics such as adult neurogenic disorders, dysphagia, augmentative communication, multicultural language issues, motor speech disorders, stuttering, speech sound disorders, aging-related communication problems, research design, and evaluation procedures for children and adults. Clinical education is a major component of the program, and students are required to complete practicum experiences in at least three different settings, including on-campus clinics, hospitals, and schools. All off-campus placements must receive approval from the placement coordinator, and students must complete all required supervised practicum clock hours before graduation. Students work directly with clients under faculty and professional supervision, developing practical skills in assessment, diagnosis, intervention planning, counseling, and evidence-based treatment. The program also offers a thesis option that allows students to substitute six credit hours of research for academic coursework, although this typically extends program completion by an additional semester. Through its strong combination of advanced coursework, clinical training, and research opportunities, the program equips graduates with the expertise and professional preparation needed for careers in healthcare, education, rehabilitation, and private practice settings.
