COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi is a 30-credit-hour graduate program designed to provide advanced interdisciplinary training in biomedical and life sciences, combining core coursework, specialized electives, and research-oriented scientific preparation in accordance with Graduate School academic policies. The program includes a structured core curriculum totaling 18 credit hours, which establishes a strong foundation in advanced biomedical knowledge and applied scientific methods. Core requirements include BSC 690 Biomedical Sciences Seminar (1 hour), which develops professional communication and scientific presentation skills, BSC 755 Advanced Physiology (3 hours), which focuses on integrated human physiological systems, and BSC 787 Comparative Immunology (3 hours), which examines immune system function across species and disease contexts. Students also complete DPH 623 Biostatistics (3 hours), providing essential training in statistical analysis and research interpretation, SKN 601 Applied Physiology in Sport, Physical Activity, and Nutrition (3 hours), which connects physiology to human performance and health sciences, and KIN 831 Gross Anatomy (3 hours) along with KIN 831L Gross Anatomy Laboratory (2 hours), offering in-depth anatomical study with hands-on cadaver or laboratory-based learning experiences. In addition to the core, students must complete 12 credit hours of approved electives, divided into 6 hours from Biological Sciences (BSC) and 6 hours from Chemistry (CHE), allowing for specialization in areas such as microbiology, molecular biology, virology, pathobiology, parasitology, medical entomology, histology, developmental biology, microbial genetics, pharmacology, toxicology, and advanced biochemistry. These electives include laboratory components where applicable, ensuring students gain both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills. The curriculum is designed to provide flexibility for students to align their studies with specific career goals in biomedical research, healthcare sciences, or preparation for doctoral and professional programs, while maintaining rigorous scientific and analytical training standards.
