COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at The University of Southern Mississippi is a highly structured and professionally focused healthcare degree designed to prepare students for registered nursing careers through a combination of general education, biological sciences, psychology, sociology, laboratory sciences, and advanced nursing coursework that develops both technical medical knowledge and patient-care skills essential for modern healthcare environments. The 124-hour curriculum begins with foundational courses in English composition, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, psychology, sociology, nutrition, and statistics before students transition into intensive professional nursing education involving classroom instruction, clinical simulations, laboratory experiences, and supervised hospital-based training; major nursing courses include pathophysiology, pharmacology, mental health nursing, health promotion and assessment, child and family nursing, population-focused nursing, leadership, evidence-based practice, healthcare systems, chronic and acute condition management across the lifespan, and complex medical conditions, allowing students to build expertise in caring for patients of all ages and health conditions. The program also includes multiple laboratory and clinical components such as NSG 321L, NSG 333L, NSG 338L, NSG 371L, NSG 426L, NSG 432L, and NSG 472L, which provide hands-on experience in patient assessment, medication administration, emergency response, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork in real healthcare settings; additionally, courses like NSG 337 Professional Nursing Concepts I and NSG 488 Leadership emphasize professional ethics, communication, leadership development, and transition into clinical practice.
