COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology is designed to provide students with a strong academic foundation in the science of human communication, preparing them for advanced study and professional careers in speech-language pathology and audiology. The program focuses on the development of knowledge and skills related to speech, language, hearing, and communication disorders across the lifespan, including their biological, neurological, and developmental bases. Students gain a deep understanding of normal and disordered communication processes through coursework in phonetics, speech and hearing sciences, anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms, neuroanatomy, language development, and audiology. The curriculum also emphasizes clinical knowledge and applied learning, including assessment procedures, intervention strategies, aural rehabilitation, and clinical observation experiences that introduce students to real-world practice in communication disorders. In addition to core major courses, students complete supporting coursework in psychology, child development, educational psychology, exceptional children, and statistics, which strengthens their ability to understand cognitive, emotional, and developmental factors influencing communication. A required foreign language component, which may include sign language with advisor approval, further enhances students’ ability to work with diverse populations. The program also includes general education requirements in written communication, natural sciences, humanities, mathematics, and social sciences to ensure broad academic development. Writing-intensive and speaking-intensive courses, along with a capstone course in communication disorders, help students integrate theoretical knowledge with applied professional skills. Clinical observation and practicum-based learning experiences are key components that prepare students for graduate-level training, which is required for professional certification and licensure in this field. Upon completion of the degree, students are well prepared to pursue advanced graduate programs in speech-language pathology or audiology and ultimately work in hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, and clinical settings, supporting individuals with communication challenges and improving their quality of life through evidence-based therapeutic practices.
