COURSE CURRICULUM

Across the University of Southern Mississippi undergraduate programs shown—Organizational Leadership BSBA, Paralegal Studies BA, Philosophy, Religion, and Law BA, Physics BS, Political Science BA, and Polymer Science and Engineering BS—a clear pattern emerges in how the curriculum is structured to balance general education, discipline-specific training, and advanced specialization. Every degree begins with a shared General Education Core (GEC) that builds foundational skills in written communication (ENG 101–102), natural sciences with lab components, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, speaking-intensive courses, and a capstone experience. However, each major significantly reshapes the later GEC requirements and integrates discipline-relevant courses into them—for example, Paralegal Studies replaces writing-intensive requirements with Legal Drafting (LGL 384), Physics embeds modern physics lab work (PHY 362L) as writing-intensive, and Polymer Science and Engineering uses polymer laboratory techniques (PSE 341L) for the same purpose. Similarly, Political Science and PRL include capstone seminars (PS 491 and PHI 480) focused on disciplinary research and discourse, while Physics uses undergraduate research (PHY 499) and Polymer Engineering uses multi-semester design projects (PSE 490–491) as culminating experiences. The major curricula then diverge strongly: Business-oriented leadership includes accounting, finance, marketing, MIS, and organizational behavior; Paralegal Studies focuses on legal research, civil litigation, drafting, property law, and equity practice; PRL emphasizes philosophy, ethics, religion, and jurisprudence pathways; Physics is heavily structured around calculus-based mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and lab-intensive experimental physics; Political Science blends theory, comparative politics, public law, and research methods; and Polymer Science and Engineering combines chemistry, physics, materials science, thermodynamics, and engineering design. Several programs also integrate interdisciplinary or applied components such as business analytics, computing, economics, or social science electives, and many offer structured pathways or accelerated law school options that allow graduate coursework to count toward undergraduate completion. Overall, while all degrees share a common liberal education foundation, each program channels students into highly specialized academic and professional trajectories—ranging from law and public policy to engineering, science, and business leadership—through progressively advanced coursework, applied labs, and capstone experiences designed to ensure both theoretical understanding and real-world competency.
