COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geology BS degree (120 hours) is a science-based program focused on understanding Earth’s materials, processes, and history, along with strong training in math, physics, chemistry, and fieldwork. In general education, students complete foundational courses in English writing, natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, communication, and a senior capstone structure to build communication and critical thinking skills. The core geology training begins with Physical Geology and Historical Geology, followed by advanced courses such as Mineralogy, Petrology, Structural Geology, Geomorphology, Paleontology, Sedimentology, and Stratigraphy, which explain how Earth is formed, how rocks are classified, and how landscapes evolve over time. Students also complete required field-based learning through Geological Field and Research Methods and Field Geology, which train them in real-world mapping, rock analysis, and geological investigation techniques. A key feature of this degree is its strong emphasis on mathematics and physical sciences: students must take Calculus I and II (and often higher levels), General Chemistry I and II, and Physics courses, which are essential for understanding geophysical processes and quantitative analysis in geology. Additional requirements include Geographic Information Systems (GIS) training and a statistics course, along with supporting science electives in areas like astronomy, biology, or ocean science depending on advisor approval. The program also requires upper-level electives in geology or related sciences to allow specialization. A capstone course in field and research methods brings together all skills learned in the program. Overall, this degree prepares students for careers in environmental consulting, mineral and energy exploration, groundwater and water resource management, geotechnical work, disaster and hazard analysis, and advanced graduate study in earth sciences, combining classroom knowledge with practical field and laboratory experience.
