COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) at the University of Southern Mississippi is a 120-credit undergraduate degree designed to give students a highly flexible yet structured academic pathway that allows them to complete graduation requirements while building a broad interdisciplinary education. The program begins with the General Education Curriculum, which includes written communication through ENG 101 and ENG 102, natural science courses requiring two lab-based classes from subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, geology, geography, or astronomy, and humanities courses including literature, history, philosophy, religion, and ethics to develop critical thinking and cultural awareness. Students also complete aesthetic values through one course in art, music, theatre, or dance appreciation, and social and behavioral sciences through two courses in fields such as psychology, sociology, economics, anthropology, political science, or geography. A mathematics requirement ensures quantitative literacy through courses like quantitative reasoning, college algebra, or higher-level math depending on placement. Communication skills are strengthened through a writing-intensive course and a speaking-intensive course such as public speaking or professional communication. The program culminates in a senior-level capstone course, BLS 402 Liberal Studies Capstone, where students integrate their learning through a research or applied project. The major area of study requires 39 credit hours, including the capstone and 36 additional credits distributed across three chosen academic areas from six options: Art and Media, Business and Economic Development, Health and Education, Humanities and Communication, Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, and Science and Engineering. Students must complete 12 hours in each selected area, with at least 6 hours at the 300 or 400 level in each, ensuring advanced coursework and academic depth. No more than 6 credits from general education can count toward this distribution, emphasizing dedicated specialization. In addition, students must complete an 18-credit concentration in a single approved minor field, allowing further focus in a chosen discipline. The remaining credits are completed through electives, giving students flexibility to tailor their education.
