COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in World Languages is a 120-hour degree program designed to develop advanced proficiency in a chosen foreign language while also building strong academic foundations in communication, humanities, social sciences, and analytical thinking. Students begin with a General Education Curriculum that includes 6 hours of written communication through ENG 101 and ENG 102, followed by 8–10 hours of natural science courses selected from disciplines such as biology, chemistry, physics, geology, geography, or environmental science, many of which include laboratory components to strengthen scientific literacy. In the humanities area, students complete 9 hours including ENG 203 World Literature and two additional courses with at least one history requirement chosen from world civilizations or related interdisciplinary studies, ensuring cultural and historical awareness. The program also includes 3 hours of aesthetic values through courses such as art, music, dance, or theatre appreciation, along with 6 hours of social and behavioral sciences selected from fields like anthropology, psychology, sociology, political science, or economics to build understanding of human behavior and global societies. A mathematics requirement of 3 hours must be completed through quantitative reasoning, college algebra, or a higher-level math course. Students also fulfill writing-intensive, speaking-intensive, and capstone requirements, including WL 462 or another writing-intensive course, a communication-based speaking course, and WL 490 World Language Capstone, which must be taken in the senior year. The major curriculum requires 30 hours of advanced coursework (200-level or above) in a single foreign language, including at least 9 hours at the 400 level, ensuring deep linguistic proficiency. Additional core requirements include WL 110 Introduction to Language, WL 210 Cross-Cultural Training, and WL 462 Translation Studies or related electives. Students also complete 6 additional hours outside the major in humanities and social sciences, selecting from disciplines like history, philosophy, film studies, anthropology, psychology, or geography. Electives may include education-focused courses for those planning to teach languages, such as educational psychology, classroom management, and student teaching experiences. Overall, the program is structured to produce graduates with advanced language skills, intercultural competence, and strong communication abilities suitable for careers in education, translation, international relations, and global industries.
