COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Mathematics program provides a structured and rigorous graduate curriculum designed to build strong theoretical foundations while also offering flexibility for students to explore advanced topics in both pure and applied mathematics. The program requires completion of four master’s core courses, which typically include foundational subjects such as real analysis, linear algebra, modern algebra, and mathematical programming or data science, ensuring that students develop essential proof-based reasoning and analytical skills. In addition, students must complete a PhD-level core sequence in one selected specialization area, such as algebra, real analysis, topology, numerical analysis, optimization, mathematical statistics, or partial differential equations, allowing deeper study in a focused branch of mathematics. A breadth requirement further ensures academic balance by requiring at least one additional graduate-level mathematics course at the 500 or 600 level, excluding introductory 50-series courses. Students complete the remaining credit hours through approved elective coursework in mathematics or, with departmental approval, related disciplines such as computer science, physics, finance, education, or statistics, supporting interdisciplinary academic development. The program also includes a research component that differs by track: Plan I requires six credit hours of thesis research (MATH 599), while Plan II substitutes one additional elective course and three credit hours of non-thesis research (MATH 598). Overall, the program totals 30 credit hours and is designed to be completed in a structured sequence that ensures both depth and breadth of mathematical knowledge.
