Some programs, such as MFA degrees in creative writing and dance, emphasize studio-based or performance-based learning where the final requirement is a major creative or artistic capstone supported by scholarly or reflective writing and oral defense, while others like MBA or EMBA programs focus on applied business skills developed through cohort-based, team-driven coursework involving case studies, simulations, and real-world decision-making. Professional degrees in counseling, public health, and rehabilitation counseling are often heavily structured, accredited (such as CACREP or CEPH standards), and include extensive supervised clinical or field experiences like internships, practicums, or applied practice hours, preparing students for licensure or certification exams such as CHES, CFP, or Praxis. In contrast, humanities programs such as English, German, or communication studies allow greater flexibility in electives and specialization areas like rhetoric, literature, linguistics, or cultural studies, often requiring comprehensive exams and sometimes a thesis or research paper. Across most programs, core requirements ensure foundational competency in theory, research methods, and discipline-specific knowledge, while electives allow customization aligned with career goals, whether in academia, industry, public service, or specialized professional practice. Nearly all programs emphasize advising structures where students work closely with faculty mentors to design a plan of study, ensure progression standards are met, and align coursework with long-term academic or career objectives, reinforcing a balance between structured requirements and individualized academic development.
