COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in English (general literature track) at the University of Alabama requires a minimum of 30 graduate semester hours, or 32 hours if a student completes the optional teaching practicum EN 533, and is designed to provide advanced training in literary studies, critical theory, research methods, and composition pedagogy. The program is structured to ensure that all students develop a strong foundation in graduate-level literary scholarship while also allowing flexibility through elective coursework. Core requirements include EN 537 Introduction to Graduate Studies, which provides training in bibliographic methods and research practices essential for advanced academic work. Students must also complete a critical theory requirement by selecting either EN 535 Literary Criticism, EN 635 Literary Criticism, or an approved alternative course, ensuring engagement with major theoretical frameworks used in literary analysis. In addition, students may take EN 533 Practicum in Teaching College English, which provides hands-on experience in composition instruction and contributes two credits toward degree completion. A significant portion of the program consists of elective coursework, requiring students to complete at least 18 credits, with a minimum of three courses at the 600 level. These electives span a wide range of literary and rhetorical fields, including American literature, British literature, Renaissance studies, Southern literature, African American literature, composition theory, rhetoric, and academic writing, allowing students to tailor their academic focus to individual interests. The program culminates in one of two options: Plan I, which requires thesis research hours, or Plan II, which substitutes six additional elective credits in place of a thesis. Both pathways are designed to ensure depth of study and intellectual development in literary scholarship, preparing graduates for careers in teaching, writing, publishing, editing, or further doctoral study in English and related disciplines.
