COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Educational Leadership at the University of Alabama is a graduate-level program designed to prepare professionals for leadership roles in P–12 educational settings through multiple flexible pathways, including certification and non-certification options. The primary track, the MA in Educational Leadership with Class A Instructional Leader certification, requires 30 semester hours and leads directly to Alabama Class A Instructional Leader certification. This option provides comprehensive training in instructional leadership, school improvement, organizational management, curriculum development, and data-informed decision-making, equipping candidates to serve as effective principals and educational leaders who can support students, teachers, families, and school communities. A Reduced-Hour Option is also available for qualified applicants who already meet certain requirements; this pathway leads to Class A Instructional Leader certification in a more streamlined format and is intended for individuals who have prior preparation or relevant professional experience, focusing specifically on certification requirements rather than a full academic program experience. In addition, the program offers a Non-Certification Overseas MA in Educational Leadership designed for international students; this version maintains the academic rigor of leadership theory and practice but does not lead to professional licensure or certification in Alabama or the United States. Across all pathways, the program emphasizes alignment with state and national standards for educational leadership and focuses on developing competencies in instructional supervision, ethical leadership, school law, and collaborative engagement with diverse educational stakeholders. Transfer credit policies allow eligible graduate coursework completed at other institutions to be evaluated and potentially applied toward degree requirements, subject to approval by the program and Graduate School guidelines, ensuring flexibility for students with prior graduate-level study. Together, these options provide multiple entry points for aspiring educational leaders, whether their goal is certification for school leadership roles, accelerated completion based on prior experience, or advanced academic study in educational leadership without licensure requirements.
