The Master of Arts in American Studies is organized through a structured yet flexible framework that guides students from entry to graduation while allowing them to design an individualized academic path based on their interests, beginning with admissions requirements that follow graduate school standards and evaluate academic background and readiness for interdisciplinary study, after which students complete curricular requirements that typically include core courses in cultural analysis along with electives drawn from multiple disciplines such as history, literature, sociology, and media studies, while transfer credit policies may allow previously completed graduate coursework to count toward the degree with approval. The program may also offer an Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP), enabling qualified undergraduates to begin graduate coursework early and complete both degrees more efficiently. As students progress, they must complete a comprehensive examination or capstone project to demonstrate mastery of their field, and many programs also include internship requirements that provide practical experience in areas like museums, nonprofits, media organizations, or cultural institutions, helping bridge academic learning with real-world application. Students typically choose between Plan I (Thesis Option), which involves conducting original research and producing a formal thesis under faculty supervision and is ideal for those considering doctoral study or research careers, and Plan II (Non-Thesis Option), which focuses on coursework, projects, or exams and is better suited for professional career paths.
