COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at The University of Alabama is a structured degree requiring about 121 total credit hours, combining lower-division foundational studies with upper-division professional nursing training, and it is designed to gradually build a student’s knowledge from basic sciences and general education into advanced clinical practice and patient care, with the lower division (first two years, 58 hours) focusing on subjects like chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, psychology, human development, mathematics, English, and humanities, which form the scientific and communication base required for nursing, while also fulfilling university core curriculum requirements, and students have flexibility to take electives or summer courses to adjust their pace, after which they transition into the upper division (final 5 semesters, 63 hours), where the program becomes highly specialized and clinically oriented, starting with courses such as human pathophysiology, medication calculations, health assessment, and foundational nursing concepts, then progressing into applied areas like nursing informatics, pharmacology, and fundamental professional nursing practice, followed by more advanced clinical training in adult health, mental health, and evidence-based practice, and in later semesters students gain hands-on experience in specialized fields including maternal and child health, pediatrics, complex patient care, community health, and leadership in nursing practice, culminating with preparation for licensure exams, ensuring graduates are ready to become registered nurses, and throughout the program, the curriculum emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and real-world clinical skills, teamwork, and patient-centered care, while also noting that the Capstone College of Nursing may update policies or course structures when needed, ensuring the program remains aligned with current healthcare standards and professional requirements.
