COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at The University of Alabama is a rigorous and flexible program designed to build strong analytical, theoretical, and applied mathematical skills while preparing students for diverse careers or advanced study, and to complete the degree students must fulfill university and college requirements along with at least 120 total credit hours, including 36 core major hours centered on foundational subjects such as Calculus I, II, and III, linear algebra, and differential equations, which collectively provide the essential framework for higher-level mathematical thinking, and students must also complete an advanced two-course sequence in a chosen area such as algebra, real analysis, probability and statistics, optimization, or applied differential equations, allowing them to begin specializing in a field of interest, while an additional 12 hours of upper-level mathematics electives further deepen knowledge and broaden expertise across topics like topology, numerical analysis, or mathematical modeling, and the program also includes ancillary coursework outside the major, such as computer science or programming classes, which enhances computational and practical problem-solving abilities relevant to modern industries, and students are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the major and complete at least 12 upper-level credit hours in residence, while also pursuing a minor or second major to complement their mathematical training, and for those seeking further specialization, optional concentrations such as applied mathematics, pure mathematics, mathematics education, and mathematical statistics and optimization allow students to tailor their coursework toward career goals in research, teaching, data analysis, or industry, making the program both academically comprehensive and adaptable to a wide range of professional pathways.
