COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in physical sciences, life sciences, and environmental systems while developing skills in data collection, analysis, and applied problem-solving for real-world environmental issues. The program begins with core coursework in environmental science or sustainable earth systems, biology with laboratory sequences, ecology and evolution, general chemistry, atmospheric science, earth surface processes, spatial reasoning, and geographic information systems or remote sensing. Students also complete training in statistical methods to support scientific data analysis and interpretation. These foundational courses prepare students to understand how natural systems function and how human activity impacts air, water, soil, and ecosystems.A major component of the program is a flexible set of upper-division electives that allows students to tailor their education based on personal interests and career goals. Students select 16 credit hours from a wide range of advanced courses in environmental science, geography, geology, and biology. These electives include topics such as climatology, hydrology, watershed management, soil science, forest ecology, conservation biology, environmental modeling, marine and freshwater ecosystems, plant and animal biology, and environmental change. Field-based and research-focused courses also provide hands-on experience in real environmental settings, helping students apply scientific methods to practical problems.The program includes ancillary coursework in calculus to ensure students have the mathematical foundation needed for scientific analysis. While a minor is not required, students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in the major and complete at least 12 upper-level credit hours on campus. Students are expected to meet regularly with academic advisors to ensure proper course planning and compliance with degree requirements.For students interested in conservation-focused careers, the program offers a Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation concentration. This option includes coursework in environmental policy, ethics, technical writing, economics, and public speaking, along with specialized training in ecosystem management, forestry, water resources, and ecological processes. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in environmental management, conservation, research, government agencies, and sustainability-focused organizations, as well as for graduate study in environmental and natural sciences.
