COURSE CURRICULUM

The University’s Economics program is designed to build strong analytical and quantitative skills while preparing students for successful careers in business, industry, government, and academia. It offers a wide range of courses that help students understand economic theory, data analysis, and real-world decision-making. The program is offered through both the Culverhouse College of Business and the College of Arts and Sciences, and students may also pursue economics as a minor alongside other majors in business. Economics majors and minors are encouraged to consult academic advisors to select advanced 400-level courses and electives that align with their career goals and future academic plans.The major requires students to complete core intermediate courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics, along with introductory finance courses and additional economics coursework. Students must also complete an ancillary course in financial analysis and modeling. In addition, they are required to choose a concentration, a second major, or an approved minor, which allows flexibility in shaping their academic focus. The program emphasizes applied learning and analytical development, and students are advised to take advanced courses such as mathematical economics for those considering graduate study.One important feature of the program is the option to specialize through concentrations such as Econometrics and Quantitative Economics or Economic Policy. The Econometrics and Quantitative Economics concentration focuses on statistical and mathematical methods used to analyze economic data, study markets, and understand decision-making processes. It prepares students for careers in data-driven fields and graduate studies. The Economic Policy concentration, on the other hand, focuses on evaluating government policies in areas such as trade, labor, healthcare, and environment, preparing students for roles in public policy, law, and government services.Overall, the Economics program provides a flexible yet rigorous education that develops critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and policy analysis skills, making graduates well-prepared for diverse professional and academic opportunities.
