COURSE CURRICULUM
The Early Childhood Education (ECE) major within the Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) is designed to prepare students to understand child development and effectively work with young children and families through research-based educational practices. As part of the university core requirements, students must complete foundational courses including Principles of Biology with laboratory work, Introductory Biology for Non-Majors, Life Span Human Development, and Introduction to Psychology. These courses provide a broad scientific and psychological understanding of human growth and behavior across the lifespan, forming the basis for advanced study in early childhood education. The major-specific curriculum focuses on specialized knowledge and practical training in early childhood education. Students take courses such as Child Development: Infancy and Toddler, Early and Middle Child Development, Foundations of Early Childhood Education, and Curriculum Planning in Early Childhood Education I and II. Additional required courses include Assessment of Young Children, Parent and Family Development, Administration of Child Centers and Programs, and Program Evaluation. These courses help students develop skills in planning curriculum, assessing child learning, managing educational programs, and working collaboratively with families and communities.A key feature of the program is the required Early Childhood Education Internship, which provides six credit hours of hands-on professional experience in real early childhood settings. Students also study developmental perspectives of young children with disabilities through SPE 471, ensuring they are prepared for inclusive education environments. In addition, students select one supporting course in research and statistics, such as Research and Critical Thinking, Elementary Statistical Methods, or Educational Statistics, to strengthen analytical and research skills. To complete the program, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in both major and university coursework, although many internship placements require a higher GPA of 2.5. An additional ancillary course in professional and multidisciplinary collaboration is also required. Overall, this program combines academic knowledge, research skills, and extensive field experience to prepare students for professional roles in early childhood education and related fields.
