COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Data Science is a structured interdisciplinary program that combines mathematics and computer science to prepare students for careers in data analysis, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation in mathematical reasoning, statistical thinking, and computational skills, followed by advanced training in data-driven technologies and applications. Students begin with ancillary courses that include Calculus I, II, and III, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Mathematics, along with foundational and intermediate computer science courses such as CS I for Majors, CS II for Majors, and Data Structures and Algorithms. These courses establish essential skills in programming, problem-solving, and mathematical modeling. The core program courses further develop specialized knowledge in Probability Theory, Mathematical Data Science, Mathematical Statistics with Applications, Database Management Systems, Data Science, Computer Algorithms, and a final Capstone in Data Science, where students apply their learning to real-world problems. In addition, students choose two advanced depth electives from areas such as Numerical Linear Algebra, Optimization Theory, Stochastic Processes, Python for Big Data, Social Media Data Analytics, High Performance Computing, or Reinforcement Learning, allowing them to focus on specific technical interests. The curriculum also includes an ethics requirement, where students study legal and ethical issues in computing through courses like Cyber Law and Ethics or Legal and Ethical Issues in Computing, ensuring responsible use of technology and data. A machine learning and artificial intelligence requirement further strengthens expertise through courses such as Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Information Retrieval, or Foundations of Machine Learning. Overall, the program requires 63 major credit hours and completion of a minor or second major, along with maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA. Students must also complete at least 12 upper-level courses on campus and meet all university graduation requirements totaling 120 credit hours, ensuring a comprehensive academic and professional preparation in the field of data science.
