COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Biology requires students to complete all university, college, and departmental requirements, along with enough coursework to reach a minimum of 120 credit hours. The biology major itself includes 64 credit hours, combining core courses, electives, and supporting science requirements. Students begin with foundational biology courses such as Principles of Biology I and II (or honors equivalents), followed by essential upper-level courses including Cell Biology, Genetics, and Ecology and Evolution, which together total 17 credit hours. In addition, students must complete 19 credit hours of biology or marine science electives at the 250 level or above, allowing them to specialize in areas such as microbiology, physiology, ecology, or marine biology. These electives must include at least two laboratory-based courses to ensure hands-on scientific experience.Ancillary courses, totaling 28 credit hours, provide a strong scientific and mathematical foundation. These include general chemistry, organic chemistry with lab, calculus, and two semesters of physics (either algebra-based or calculus-based). Although these courses are required, their grades are not included in the biology major GPA. The program also allows up to four credit hours from special experiential courses such as undergraduate research, seminars, or outreach to count toward the major, giving students opportunities to gain practical and research experience beyond the classroom.Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the major and complete at least 12 credit hours of upper-level biology courses in residence. A minor is not required for this degree. There are strict academic policies, including a limit of three attempts per course and a requirement to earn at least a C- in prerequisite courses for upper-level classes. Overall, the program is designed to build strong knowledge in biological sciences while developing laboratory, analytical, and research skills for careers or advanced study.
