COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering at The University of Alabama requires a total of 125 credit hours, combining general education, major coursework, and ancillary requirements to provide a comprehensive engineering education focused on building systems. The major portion includes 66 credit hours and covers a wide range of engineering disciplines essential to building design and construction. Students begin with foundational engineering courses and progress into subjects such as statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, and engineering graphics. The curriculum also emphasizes civil and structural engineering topics, including surveying, construction materials, geotechnical engineering, reinforced concrete, structural steel design, and vertical construction methods. In addition, students study architectural engineering fundamentals and complete a capstone design course focused on building systems integration. Electrical and mechanical systems are also key components, with coursework in electrical engineering, electric power, thermal systems, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). Students also complete engineering statistics and select upper-level electives to broaden their technical expertise.The ancillary requirements total 34 credit hours and provide the scientific and mathematical foundation needed for advanced engineering study. These include courses in chemistry, calculus I through III, differential equations, and physics with calculus, along with an approved additional science course. Students also take an art history course to gain an understanding of design and aesthetics in the built environment. In addition to these requirements, general education courses complete the overall degree structure. Throughout the program, students must follow the academic policies of the College of Engineering and meet all prerequisites. The curriculum is designed to develop strong analytical, technical, and design skills, preparing graduates to work on complex building systems that are safe, efficient, and sustainable.
