COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music Therapy at the University of Alabama is a specialized and professionally oriented program that combines music, psychology, and clinical training, requiring a minimum of 129 total credit hours to graduate. The curriculum includes approximately 89 hours of major coursework covering core music theory (voice leading, harmony, and advanced harmony), music history, and a comprehensive sequence of music therapy-specific classes such as introductory therapy concepts, techniques, repertoire, psychology of music, and multiple practicum experiences that provide hands-on clinical exposure. Students must also complete an extensive internship (MUS 489) worth 6 credits, which serves as a capstone clinical training experience in real healthcare or therapeutic settings. Performance and musicianship remain essential components, with requirements in applied music (six semesters), ensemble participation, and additional skills such as guitar and piano proficiency, both of which must be demonstrated before beginning the internship. Supporting (ancillary) courses outside the major include psychology subjects like introductory psychology and psychopathology, along with basic biology courses, reflecting the healthcare focus of the degree. Students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in their major and complete a minimum of 12 upper-level (300- or 400-level) credit hours in residence. Progression into advanced (300-level) music therapy courses requires successful completion of prior coursework, including advanced harmony, a minimum GPA of 2.0, and grades of C- or higher in all previous therapy classes. A critical requirement is passing the comprehensive music therapy exam during the final on-campus semester; failure to pass within two attempts can delay or prevent entry into the internship. The program does not require a minor, allowing full focus on therapy training.
