COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art requires students to complete all university, college, and departmental requirements, including general education courses, an approved minor, and sufficient credits to reach a minimum of 120 semester hours, while the studio art major itself consists of 42 credit hours that combine foundational training, advanced studio practice, and art history coursework to provide both practical skills and contextual understanding of visual arts; the program begins with 12 credit hours of core courses such as Drawing I and II, 2D Design, and 3D Design, which establish essential artistic techniques, visual literacy, and creative problem-solving abilities, followed by 18 credit hours of studio art electives, including 12 hours at the advanced 300–400 level and an additional 6 hours of electives that may include digital or graphic design courses, allowing students to explore and specialize in areas aligned with their artistic interests; in addition to studio work, students must complete ancillary courses in art history, selecting two survey courses and one upper-level course to gain historical and theoretical perspectives on art, though these grades do not count toward the major GPA; a key requirement is the completion of a capstone course, typically taken in the final semesters, where students create and present a cohesive body of work that reflects their artistic development and conceptual understanding; students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in the major and complete a minimum of 12 upper-level credits in residence, ensuring academic depth and institutional engagement, while also meeting regularly with academic advisors for course planning and registration approval; overall, the program provides a balanced combination of technical training, creative exploration, and art historical knowledge, preparing students for careers in visual arts or related fields and for further study if desired.
