COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish requires students to complete all university, college, and departmental requirements, including general education, an approved minor, and sufficient coursework to reach at least 120 semester hours, while the Spanish major itself consists of 39 credit hours combining advanced language study with cultural, literary, and linguistic analysis, ensuring students develop both fluency and critical understanding; the major includes 27 credit hours of upper-level coursework, beginning with cornerstone courses where students select three classes focusing on conversation, advanced grammar, or cultural studies of Spain and Latin America, followed by two literature courses covering Spanish and Latin American texts from different historical periods, and one linguistics course that explores language structure or pronunciation, along with additional electives including one 300- or 400-level course and two advanced 400-level courses to deepen specialization; students must also complete 12 credit hours of ancillary language courses at the introductory and intermediate levels unless they qualify for advanced placement through a language assessment or prior coursework, and these ancillary grades do not count toward the major GPA; a minimum of 12 upper-level credits must be completed on campus, though approved study abroad programs such as those in Spain or Colombia may count toward this requirement, encouraging global immersion; students are required to meet regularly with academic advisors to ensure proper course planning and progress, and placement into the appropriate course level is determined through a university language placement test or prior credit, with opportunities to earn placement credit through petition in some cases; overall, the program provides a structured yet flexible pathway that builds language proficiency, cultural competence, and analytical skills, preparing students for careers in education, translation, international business, and global communication.
