COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages and Literature requires students to complete all University, College, and departmental requirements, including general education, major coursework in a selected language track, an approved minor, and additional electives to reach a minimum of 120 credit hours. Students must also meet GPA standards, upper-level residency requirements, and other academic policies set by the College of Arts and Sciences, including completing at least 12 hours of 300- or 400-level major coursework on campus. Academic planning is emphasized, and students are expected to meet regularly with departmental advisors to ensure proper course sequencing and degree progress. The program requires a minor and provides guidance on language placement through testing or prior coursework, ensuring students begin at an appropriate level in French, German, Greek, Italian, or Latin. The curriculum is structured around a core requirement of intermediate language study, cultural studies, and literature courses, totaling 18 credit hours, which is then completed within the student’s chosen track. Each track—Classical Civilization, French, German, Greek, Italian, or Latin—includes additional language training, cultural study, literature analysis, and elective coursework tailored to the specific linguistic and cultural focus. For example, classical tracks emphasize ancient Greek and Latin language study along with literature, history, philosophy, and mythology, while modern language tracks such as French, German, and Italian include advanced communication, linguistics, cultural studies, and specialized topics like cinema, business language, or global culture. Elective options allow students to deepen their expertise in areas such as linguistics, translation, creative writing, history, and interdisciplinary studies.
