COURSE CURRICULUM
Students completing the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English must fulfill all University, College, and departmental requirements, including general education, major coursework, an approved minor, and additional electives to reach a minimum of 120 total semester hours. The English major is designed to build strong skills in critical reading, analytical thinking, and advanced writing, while allowing students flexibility to explore literature, language, and professional writing areas. At the 200-level, students select three courses from a broad list that may include literature surveys, world literature, American literature, African American literature, Shakespeare, creative writing introductions, linguistics, and topics such as literature and social change or data and society. These courses provide a foundational understanding of literary traditions and language study. Students must also complete one pre-1700 literature course and one 1700–1900 literature course, ensuring exposure to historical development in English and American literary traditions. Additionally, students choose one course in rhetoric, composition, linguistics, or writing, such as technical writing, legal writing, creative writing, or research-based writing seminars. The major further requires six elective courses, including four at the 400-level and two at the 300 or 400 level, allowing students to specialize in advanced literary studies, writing, or language-focused topics. The program maintains academic standards requiring a minimum 2.0 GPA in the major, residency requirements for upper-level courses, and completion of a minor. Students must also meet advising requirements and follow structured academic planning to ensure timely graduation. The department offers additional opportunities such as internships, creative writing courses, and professional writing experiences. Students may also pursue a Digital, Public, and Professional Writing concentration, which focuses on applied writing skills in areas such as technical writing, legal writing, science communication, grant writing, and media writing, along with advanced capstone and internship courses. Overall, the program prepares students for careers and graduate study by strengthening communication, analytical reasoning, and writing expertise across academic and professional contexts.
