COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Economics offered by the College of Arts and Sciences provides students with a strong foundation in economic theory, analysis, and applied quantitative methods. The program is also available through the Culverhouse College of Business, although course prerequisites may differ between colleges. Notably, Arts and Sciences economics majors are not required to take certain business courses such as Intro to Accounting or Legal Environment of Business. The major is designed to be flexible, allowing students to choose a path that aligns with their academic interests and career goals, whether in economics, business, law, or public policy. The program offers two main pathways: a Quantitative Track and a Standard Track. The Quantitative Track is designed for students who want a more rigorous, math-intensive approach to economics. It includes core courses such as Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, Intermediate Microeconomics, and Intermediate Macroeconomics. Students also take advanced courses like Economic Forecasting and Analysis and Econometrics, which focus on data-driven economic modeling and statistical analysis. In addition, students complete 12 credit hours of upper-level economics electives and must fulfill the requirements of a Mathematical Statistics minor, strengthening their quantitative and analytical skills for research or technical careers. The Standard Track provides a broader and more flexible approach to economics. It includes the same introductory and intermediate core courses but allows students to complete 18 hours of economics electives based on their interests. This track also requires supporting coursework in statistics or data analysis and Calculus I, ensuring students have a basic quantitative foundation.Overall, both tracks prepare students for diverse career opportunities in fields such as business, finance, government, and research, as well as for advanced study in economics or related disciplines. The program emphasizes analytical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application of economic principles.
