COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Criminology and Criminal Justice requires students to complete a minimum of 120 semester credit hours, including University general education requirements, an approved minor, and 33 credit hours within the major itself. The program is designed to provide a structured understanding of crime, criminal behavior, and the functioning of the criminal justice system while also allowing flexibility through elective coursework and a required minor. Within the major, students begin with foundational courses such as Principles of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Criminal Theory, Research Methods, and Statistics, which together build a strong base in understanding how crime is studied, measured, and explained. These core courses develop analytical and research skills that are essential for interpreting criminal behavior and evaluating justice system policies. Beyond the core, students complete a set of criminology electives that allow them to explore specialized areas of interest, such as law enforcement, corrections, forensic studies, or legal systems. A portion of these electives may include internship or independent study experiences, providing practical exposure to real-world criminal justice settings. The program also includes upper-level coursework, ensuring that students engage with advanced topics and critical perspectives in the field. A minimum grade of C- is required in all criminal justice courses, and students must maintain a 2.0 GPA in the major to graduate. Additionally, at least 12 hours of upper-level coursework must be completed in residence at the university. Although ancillary courses are not required, students must formally declare the major before enrolling in upper-level CJ courses. The program also requires completion of a minor, ensuring academic breadth and interdisciplinary learning. Overall, the degree prepares students for careers in law enforcement, corrections, homeland security, legal studies, and related fields, as well as for graduate or professional study in criminal justice and law-related disciplines.
