COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Art History requires students to complete all university, college, and departmental requirements, along with an approved minor and enough coursework to reach a minimum of 120 credit hours. The major itself consists of 39 credit hours and is structured to provide both breadth and depth in the study of art across different cultures and time periods. Students begin by selecting two survey courses from options such as Survey of Art I, II, or III, which introduce major artistic traditions and historical developments. They then complete 9 credit hours of upper-level (300–400) art history electives, allowing for more specialized study. A key requirement is a 3-credit non-Western art course, ensuring global perspective through subjects like Asian or Byzantine art. Students also complete an additional 12 credit hours of art history electives to further tailor their interests. The program includes a required course in Theories and Methods of Art History, which builds critical analysis and research skills, along with a 400-level seminar focused on a specific topic area such as Renaissance, American, or African American art. These two courses are often taken together as a capstone experience in the senior year. In addition to major coursework, students must complete a 3-credit ancillary course in art outside the major. At least 12 credit hours of upper-level courses must be completed in residence at the university. A minor is required, and students must work closely with academic advisers to ensure all requirements are met. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, research, and interpretive skills essential for understanding art in historical and cultural contexts.
