COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences BA program at The University of Alabama is a flexible, interdisciplinary degree built around the completion of two approved minors, with at least one housed in the College of Arts and Sciences. Each minor typically requires between 15 and 24 credit hours, most commonly around 17, meaning the total major ranges from approximately 30 to 48 credit hours depending on the chosen combination. Students must complete at least six upper-level (300–400 level) credit hours in residence for each minor, totaling a minimum of 12 upper-level hours within the major. Because of the wide range of possible minor combinations, students are expected to follow the specific requirements listed in the university catalog for each approved minor based on their catalog year. In addition to the major, students must complete the College of Arts and Sciences general education requirements, totaling about 53 credit hours, along with free electives ranging from 19 to 37 hours to reach the overall 120 credit hours required for graduation. A key component of the program is the ALA 495 Capstone Seminar, a 2-credit course focused on career readiness and applying interdisciplinary knowledge to real-world goals. Students must also complete at least 36 upper-level credit hours overall, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 across university coursework and within each minor, and ensure all degree requirements align with a single catalog year. This program is particularly suited for students with diverse academic backgrounds, as it allows previously completed coursework at UA to count toward the selected minors, offering both efficiency and customization in completing a degree.
