COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology requires students to complete all university, college, and departmental requirements, along with a minor or second major, and enough coursework to total at least 120 credit hours. The anthropology major itself consists of 34 credit hours and provides a comprehensive introduction to the field’s four main subdisciplines: cultural, archaeological, biological, and linguistic anthropology. Students begin with foundational courses including Intro to Cultural Anthropology, Intro to Archaeology, Language and Culture, and Biological Anthropology. These core courses prepare students for advanced study, as specific introductory classes are required before enrolling in upper-level courses within each subfield. Students must then complete upper-level coursework, including at least one archaeology course and one biological, cultural, or linguistic anthropology course at the 300–400 level, along with a mix of electives totaling 18 additional credit hours, including 12 hours at the 300 level or above. The program offers flexibility through a wide range of elective options, allowing students to explore topics such as ancient civilizations, health and human origins, ethnography, language, and global cultures. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the major and complete at least 12 hours of upper-level coursework in residence at the university. While there are no required ancillary courses, students planning for graduate study are encouraged to learn a foreign language. The program also offers optional concentrations in Health Professions and Archaeology of the Americas, which guide elective choices toward specific career goals without adding extra credit hours. Academic advising is essential, and students must ensure they meet all requirements and prerequisites, which generally include prior coursework or instructor permission for advanced classes.
