COURSE CURRICULUM

The Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner track within the Master of Science in Nursing program at The University of Akron builds on a 14-credit nursing core and integrates specialized advanced practice coursework totaling 30 credit hours. The nursing core covers essential areas including information management in advanced nursing practice, health policy, pathophysiological concepts, and evidence-based practice, providing all students with a strong foundation for clinical decision-making and leadership in healthcare. Progression through the program requires a minimum grade of B- in all courses to maintain good academic standing. The Adult Gerontology Primary Care track is designed to meet certification eligibility requirements through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), ensuring graduates are fully prepared for advanced practice. Coursework in this track includes advanced health assessment and clinical pharmacology across the lifespan, along with four sequential Adult/Gerontological Health Nursing NP courses, each supported by corresponding practicum experiences that allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world clinical settings. Additionally, three Clinical Management courses provide comprehensive training in patient management, chronic disease care, and complex decision-making in adult and geriatric populations. This rigorous program equips graduates with the expertise to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care, lead clinical initiatives, and assume critical roles in healthcare delivery as advanced practice nurse practitioners.
